Salt Mines

Salzburg’s wealth was once measured in “white gold,” or salt - hence the name, “Salzburg” (meaning: Salt Mountain.)  For centuries, Celtic tribes once mined salt from the limestone mountains, unearthing a maze of passageways and corridors in the process.

Today, the Salt Mines of the Salzburg region are among the oldest mines in the world that are open to the public.  Guided tours start out by taking a short train ride into the mountain.  Once there, its a walking tour into the past with plenty of info-spots about the history of the salt mines and trade.  A must see.
