Commonly recognized as the “von Trapp” villa, Schloss Frohnburg was built as a summer manor for Prince Gandolf in 1660, and was originally called Schloss Grafenau. The manicured parks and gardens that once surrounded the estate have long disappeared and today, this quiet, unadorned retreat serves as a dormitory and concert venue for the Salzburger Universität Mozarteum.
The front courtyard and rear terrace of the palace was used as the von Trapp villa in The Sound of Music movie. Originally revered as a “second choice” location for the family’s home, it’s hard to imagine now what the movie would be like if they used a different villa.
The OFFICIAL TOUR visits this location however, the palace itself is not open for sightseeing tours.
