Founded in 713, Nonnberg is considered to be the oldest nunnery in the world - existing without interruptions. The church itself, where Maria and Captain von Trapp were married in 1927, was rebuilt between 1464 and 1506 following a fire in 1423.
As part of the OFFICIAL TOUR, guests have an opportunity to stroll the courtyard and visit inside the church but for those wishing to visit the “Abbey,” kindly remember that it is a house of worship and not a movie set. Out of respect for the sisters and for the establishment, our guides refrain from conducting tours while inside.
(Despite popular belief, the enormous Abbey courtyard that appeared in the film, where the nuns sing “Maria,” is fictional. To see photos of the set, click on “Movie Photos,” and then, “On the Set.”)
