A cog railway is a mountain railway with a special toothed rack rail mounted between the running rails. The trains are fitted with one or more cogwheels that mesh with this rack rail, allowing the locomotives to haul trains up steeply inclined slopes.
The railway (pictured above), started its operation in 1893; taking passengers from the town of Sankt Wolfgang up to the summit of Schafberg (1783m). One of the older steam trains (still in use today) has a cameo role in The Sound of Music.
The cog railway tour to the summit is part of the OFFICIAL TOUR, where Austria’s magnificent lake district can be seen from one of the highest vantage points in the region. The view is spectacular!
